The Video Platform Offers Users Authority to Decrease AI-Generated Media in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to cut down on the quantity of AI-created videos appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the company disclosed that it now features over 1 bn content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The new functionality is being tested over the next few weeks before a widespread launch. This advancement comes amid a rise in AI content, driven by emerging AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that nearly a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this content is classified as low-quality AI content, a term for inferior, bulk-generated content that is often illogical or surreal.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content made with AI tools, from AI artwork to informative clips, and we aim to offer the community the option to increase or decrease of that, according to their own preferences,” said a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

The platform shared that there are now over a billion videos on its network identified as made with AI. In total, in excess of 100 m pieces of content are added to the app daily, making clips made by AI a minor portion of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be capable of decrease or raise the amount of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the “manage topic” setting in the application and selecting AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be modified under the filter cover current affairs, fashion, beauty, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its rules require content makers to tag convincing AI-generated content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the app will from now on attach an AI-generated label to content made using its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an collaborative effort for identifying artificial media. This measure is intended to help prevent users from attempting to evade the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

The company is also launching a $2 million AI literacy fund for experts and organizations to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will support non-profit groups specializing in educating computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has defended its moderation strategy, during debate over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of review team members in the UK. TikTok is expected to eliminate 439 jobs in its content moderation team in the UK capital, with worker representatives and internet security professionals expressing worry that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A senior executive stated that human moderation would continue to be important, but automated tools can shield workers by eliminating the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by staff. The platform stated a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content seen by content reviewers over the past year due to reliance on its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to balance staff and AI to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to limit contact with harmful content as swiftly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is making a difference operate efficiently.”
