EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
